Is your SMSF SuperStream ready?

All self-managed super funds (SMSFs) now need to be able to receive SuperStream-compliant contributions.

To do this, you will need to provide the following details to your employer.

Your:

  • SMSF Australian business number (ABN)
  • SMSF bank account details to receive the contributions
  • an active electronic service address (ESA) to receive the data associated with the contributions.

If this information is not provided to your employer they may direct your contributions made on your behalf to the employer default fund.

You need to check with your electronic service address provider that your address is active before you give it to your employer. You should only use an electronic service address where you have permission to do so from your provider. If your SMSF’s electronic service address isn’t active, your super contributions may not reach your SMSF.

If your SMSF doesn’t have an active electronic service address, you can obtain one from an SMSF messaging provider. You may also obtain one through your SMSF administrator, tax agent, accountant or bank.

As specialists in the SMSF area we are able to offer Electronic Service Addresses at a discounted rate.

SuperStream is a government initiative designed to streamline your super payments. This means your employer will need to send the right amount of super into your fund at the right time.

Business owners just don’t have time to compare different accounting firms to see which one has the best packages with the best inclusions (many of which they would pay for but never use).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SuperStream?

SuperStream is an ATO-mandated electronic standard for how employers and SMSFs process and send super contributions and data to super funds.

Do SMSFs need to comply with SuperStream?

Yes — once an SMSF receives employer contributions, it must be SuperStream-ready to receive and process those payments in the required electronic format.

What are the key requirements for SMSF SuperStream readiness?

An SMSF must have an Australian Business Number (ABN), a unique bank account, electronic service addresses (ESAs) and software or service provider support to receive contributions electronically.

What happens if an SMSF isn’t SuperStream compliant?

Non-compliance can lead to payment delays, administrative difficulties and potential ATO compliance issues for employers and trustees.

How can SMSFs become SuperStream ready?

Work with your accountant or platform provider to set up electronic receipting, ensure correct account details, and verify data standards are met before contributions are received.

What details do I need to give my employer so they can pay my SMSF correctly?

To receive SuperStream contributions properly, you’ll need to give your employer your SMSF’s ABN, your SMSF bank account details, and an active Electronic Service Address (ESA) for the contribution data.

Changed to this company in 2019 from former accountant and love their approach of organizing everything for me face to face with Xero set up plus being able to call as much as I need for set annual fee. They also picked up on something that was not done correctly by my former accountant and saved me $4k for this.
